Okay, I've not been doing any real blogging, because all I want to write about is the bar exam, and how I know I failed, and I'm sick to my stomach about it, but that is totally boring and self-indulgent, so I have basically shut down until the results come out in the next few weeks. But American Idol talk is harmless, so I'll indulge.
I thought last night was GREAT! Only Jordin sucked. And she's totally safe for next week, based on her votes from the Idol Gives Back week, so it doesn't even matter that she sucked. And the judges totally gave her a pass, because it is not her "genre." I think that is kind of bullshit, because everyone else pulled it off okay, and it wasn't so much that it was a rock song that caused her to blow. It was that she picked a song where she couldn't hit the notes, revealing her weak lower register.
The biggest surprise of the night was Blake. Watching his clip with Jon Bon Jovi, I was so afraid his performance would be cringe-worthy. The bit of singing with Jon Bon Jovi they showed didn't sound good, and Jon sounded a little skeptical of Blake's planned rendition. But as soon as I saw Blake with his dark hair, I was riveted. I thought he was awesome. I didn't like him much at the beginning of the season, and now I'm a huge Blake fan. I'm not so sure that he'd be that interesting to listen to on the radio, but he's a great performer, totally charismatic and original. I think he'll have a very successful music career, even as a producer etc. Loved him.
And I think Melinda won the whole thing tonight. The first few times I saw her, I thought she was amazing, but then she started to bore me. She seemed so much older than 29, and I couldn't picture her as a pop star. She always sang such old tired songs, and she looked like a cabaret singer. But the last two weeks I've really liked her, she looked great and young, and tonight she proved she can sing anything. Totally Tina Turner. She outshone everyone else vocally as Simon said. I've been thinking maybe Jordin should win the whole thing, because she has the whole package, but she just does not have the pipes that Melinda has, and Melinda can put the package together very well, too. She is just a pro. Jordin is very popular, and I think she'll be around until the final three at least, and she still might win it all, but I don't think she should.
LaKisha wsa great tonight, and I was glad for her, but she doesn't have enough versatility or personality to be a big pop star, so I don't think she'll go much further. She has done amazingly well for a totally untrained singer, who basically is a church singer. If she had started earlier, with training and coaching, she may have blown everyone else "out the box" as Randy says.
Chris was dull, not a big fan of his, he'll definitely go home this week. Not a big Phil fan either. He definitely has the "best" voice of the guys, but he just doesn't do it for me. He was good this week, but I still think he may go home.
My prediction: Chris and LaKisha will go home.
